چکیده

Observations of type II radio bursts and energetic electron events indicate that shocks can form at 1Y3 solar radii and are responsible for the GeV nucleon 1 energies observed in ground level solar energetic particle (SEP) events. Here we provide the first study of the lower corona produced from 10 state-of-the-art models. In particular, we look to the Alfvén speed profiles as the criterion for shock formation, independent of exciting agent (e.g., flares and CMEs). Global magnetohydrodynamic models produce Alfvén speed profiles that are in conflict with observations: (1) multiple SEP events are observed with a single exciting agent, but most profiles are missing the ‘‘hump’’ required to form multiple shocks; and (2) few slow CMEs cause large SEP events, but most profiles drop very quickly, allowing all slow CMEs to drive strong shocks to form between 1 and 3 R . Simplified Alfvén wave-driven wind models have steeper profiles, but are still in disagreement with multiple shock formation. Only studies that include Alfvén waves with physically based damping are in agreement with observations. This implies the results of these one-dimensional local studies must be included in global models before we can study shock formation in the lower corona. Alfvén Waves and Shock Wave Formation at an X-point Magnetic Field Configuration

We present MHD numerical simulations of the propagation of Alfvén waves in inhomogeneous magnetic fields whose topology consists of two-dimensional X-points threaded by a nonvanishing normal component. The coupling of the waves with the background field gradients leads to the development of fast-mode shock trains propagating normal to the average normal magnetic field. The fronts occur with a f...

Alfvén Waves and Turbulence in the Solar Atmosphere and Solar Wind

We solve the problem of propagation and dissipation of Alfvénic turbulence in a model solar atmosphere consisting of a static photosphere and chromosphere, transition region, and open corona and solar wind, using a phenomenological model for the turbulent dissipation based on wave reflection. We show that most of the dissipation for a given wave-frequency spectrum occurs in the lower corona, an...

Coralline red algae from the Lower Pliocene Shagra Formation of Wadi Wizer, Red Sea coast, Egypt: Biofacies analysis, systematics and palaeoenvironmental implications

Coralline red algae are highly abunadant and well diversified in the well exposed carbonate deposits of the Lower Pliocene Shagra Formation at Wadi Wizer, Red Sea coast, Egypt. Lithostratigraphically, the Shagra Formation unconformably overlies the Late Miocene Marsa Alam Formation and underlies the Quaternary deposits. This carbonate facies is dominated by different assemblage of coralline red...

Making the corona and the fast solar wind: a self-consistent simulation for the low-frequency Alfvén waves from photosphere to 0.3AU

We show that the coronal heating and the fast solar wind acceleration in the coronal holes are natural consequence of the footpoint fluctuations of the magnetic fields at the photosphere, by performing one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical simulation with radiative cooling and thermal conduction. We initially set up a static open flux tube with temperature 10K rooted at the photosphere. We impo...
